In financial trouble, Henry Leland sold the company to Henry Ford on February 4, 1922 for 8 million dollars, the amount determined by the judge presiding over the receivership. After a few months the Lelands left the company, and Edsel Ford designed a new body for the L series, becoming president with Ernest C. Kanzler as general manager. Hydraulic shock absorbers were added, and Edsel and Kanzler trimmed manufacturing costs by about 1,000 dollars per car.
