Maruti Suzuki is the marque under which Suzuki's Indian subsidiary, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, sells its passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in India. The name descends from Maruti Udyog Limited, the state-backed company formed in February 1981 as a joint venture with Suzuki, which became the first Japanese carmaker and the first major foreign automaker to invest in India. Local production began in December 1983 with the Maruti 800, followed by the Maruti Van in 1984 and the Gypsy in 1985. The Indian government later reduced its holding and sold its remaining shares to Suzuki Motor Corporation in 2007. By the cited source's figures, Maruti Suzuki is the largest Suzuki subsidiary by production volume and sales, with a 42 percent share of the Indian passenger car market as of September 2022.
