Humber was a British maker of bicycles, motorcycles and cars. Its company, Humber Limited, was incorporated and listed on the stock exchange in 1887 and took its name from the cycle business of Thomas Humber. A motor division begun in 1896 grew far more important than the cycle side, and the cycle trade marks were sold to Raleigh in 1932. The Rootes brothers became involved through Hillman in 1928, acquired 60 percent of the ordinary capital, and from 1932 began to make Humber the holding company for the vehicle makers that became the Rootes Group, which later included Hillman, Commer, Karrier, Sunbeam-Talbot and Singer. The Chrysler Corporation bought the Group in 1967, and Humber is now a dormant marque for cars as well as cycles.
