Toyota Type 73 medium truck

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The Type 73 medium truck is an all-terrain four-wheel-drive truck of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, known as the 1 1/2 ton truck. It replaced various earlier light and medium trucks in service, among them the three-quarter ton truck made by Toyota and Nissan that had served since the 1950s and had become obsolete partly because of the high fuel consumption of its gasoline engine. Japanese truck makers were told to develop a successor, and after competitive bidding Toyota and Hino Motors were selected to develop and build the Type 73 medium truck.
