The Leyland Hippo Mk II was a heavy general service cargo truck used by the British Army and Royal Air Force in the Second World War and the years just after it. Planning for D-Day concluded that trucks with a 10-ton load offered big logistic gains, so Leyland designed a new Hippo from 1943, with production starting in late 1944. It arrived too late for the days after D-Day, but about 1,000 were in service by VE Day. It was a wheeled 6x4 with a 100 bhp Leyland six-cylinder inline diesel, a five-speed gearbox and a two-speed auxiliary box, and a new two-man enclosed steel cab whose top could be removed to cut shipping height. The Mk IIA had narrower dual rear tyres.
