Leyland Roadrunner

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The Leyland Roadrunner was a forward-control distribution truck, the last model of the British Leyland Motor Corporation to come out of the T45 project. It was launched in 1984 as a 7.5 tonne truck to compete with the Ford Cargo and to replace the old Leyland Super G. It had a single cab based on the T45, with many pressed parts including the doors taken from the larger trucks, a very large windscreen, a small kerb-side window under it so that the driver could see the pavement edge, heated mirrors and ZF power steering as standard. At first it used the 120 PS Leyland 6.98NV diesel with Turner gearboxes; later a Cummins B-series diesel built in Darlington gave 120 to 145 PS with a turbocharger, together with ventilated front disc brakes and a tractor version. After 1987 a 10 tonne version followed, as a tipper or crane truck among others. It was sold as the DAF 600/800/1000 in continental Europe and from 1990 as the Leyland DAF 45; production stopped at the end of 1993, and the DAF 45/55 followed in 1994.
