Mercedes-Benz Actros MP1

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The Mercedes-Benz Actros MP1 is the first generation of the Actros heavy truck, internal series BM 950 to 954, which Mercedes-Benz introduced at the IAA commercial vehicle show in 1996 as the successor to the long-running Heavy Class (SK), so that it was at first called the Heavy Class New. It was the first Mercedes-Benz truck designed in close cooperation between stylists and aerodynamics engineers, with about 17 percent less air resistance than the SK, and it brought electronic control and CAN-bus networking to the company's trucks: a fully electronically controlled air brake system with disc brakes on every axle for road use, electropneumatic gear shifting and the new OM 501 LA V6 and OM 502 LA V8 engines. Buyers could choose short, medium or long Megaspace cabs and two-, three- or four-axle chassis. Early trucks were criticised for a cheap-looking interior and unfinished details, but sales were strong, and Mercedes replaced the reused SK components, such as the rear axle, about a year after launch. The generation ran until the thorough facelift for the 2003 model year.
