Leyland Freighter

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The Leyland Freighter was a forward-control 4x2 distribution truck and tractor unit of the British Leyland Motor Corporation, introduced in 1982 alongside the Leyland Cruiser as part of the T45 project. It served the fast-growing sector up to 17 tonnes gross weight, below the Roadtrain and above the Leyland Super G, and replaced the Leyland Boxer and Clydesdale ranges, whose chassis it took over in modified form with rear axles from Maudslay or Albion. It shared the smaller T45 cab with the Cruiser, in normal or double sleeper form and without a high-roof option, and was sold as a box van or as a chassis for bodybuilders. The engine was the Leyland 400 diesel of up to 160 PS, with or without turbocharger, with a six-speed Turner gearbox. From 1987 a Cummins B-series diesel of up to 180 PS with a ZF six-speed gearbox was fitted instead. From 1990 the truck was sold as the Leyland DAF 50, and production ended in 1994 when the DAF 65/75 replaced it.
