Leyland Hippo

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The Leyland Hippo was a 6x4 heavy general service cargo truck made by Leyland Motors. Introduced in 1929, it stayed in production for 40 years. The first six-wheeled, 12-ton goods carrier was shown at the Commercial Motor Transport Exhibition at Olympia in 1929 as a rigid-chassis 6x4 with the largest engine Leyland had made, an inline six of 72 brake horsepower giving 30 mph through a four-speed gearbox. The cab-over unit was 27.3 feet long, with tipper and platform models, and a 1931 facelift stretched it to 30 feet and 19 tons of capacity. An eight-wheeled Octopus followed in 1934, and the army took 330 militarised Hippos at the start of the Second World War.
