The first-generation Mitsubishi Fuso Fighter was introduced in February 1984 as the successor to the FK series, though FK still names the lighter-duty Fighter models. It was designed in line with the smaller Canter and the larger The Great and shared the headlights, doors and rear window glass of the latter, with four round headlights in most export markets instead of the square lamps used in Japan. In December 1987 it gained refreshed front styling with an additional panel above the grille and a 230 PS intercooled turbo-diesel engine, the FM series was updated in February 1988 alongside the 4WD-based FL models, and February 1990 brought Heisei-era emissions compliance. A July 1991 facelift added corner lamps, ABS as standard on the FK and a 210 PS naturally aspirated engine. Indonesian production as the Maru-P ran from 1985 to April 2022 with 6D16 engines of 190 and 220 PS.
