The second-generation GL1100 came out in 1979 as a 1980 model with a bore 3 mm larger, cylinder heads modified to burn better at low and middle engine speeds and a longer wheelbase with air suspension, a seat that could be adjusted and tubeless tires, a first, on black reverse ComStar wheels. In March 1980 Honda released the Interstate, the first Japanese turn-key tourer. Japan built the GL1100 until May 1980, when Honda began assembling 1981 models at its Marysville Motorcycle Plant in Ohio.
