Honda introduced the XL250 in 1972, a four stroke motorcycle of 250 cc, and manufactured it through most of the 1980s. When it appeared it was the first modern four-stroke enduro motorcycle and the first mass-produced four-valve motorcycle, and with the later XL350 it laid the groundwork for the modern big four-stroke enduro wave. It is a street-legal dual-sport bike that looks and shares many characteristics with a dirt bike, producing 20 horsepower from its 250 cc four-stroke motor and weighing 288 pounds. Demand for the model has remained high among collectors and enthusiasts. This site lists a page for every model year in the span covered here, each focused on what changed in that year, grouped into 2 generations: the 1972 to 1981 (1972 to 1981 model years); the 1982 to 1988 (1982 to 1988 model years). Each year page links to its generation, to this model page, to the previous model year and to Honda.
