The first span of the XL250 runs from its introduction in 1972 to the XL250S of 1981, the last to have the 23 inch front wheel, twin rear shocks and 6 volt electrical system that were unique to it. The XL250 is completely mechanically operated, with no hydraulics, and was narrowly streamlined, only 12 inches wide at its widest point excluding the handlebars. The 1980 model introduced few changes, though a rear chain tensioner was added during its production. Wikipedia does not number XL250 generations. Each model year has its own page.
