The 1987 model year is the last of the third generation. The wagon's four-wheel drive changed from a push button system to a Real-Time 4WD system with an automatic viscous coupling unit that shifted power to the rear wheels when needed; those models are recognizable by charcoal grey wheel center covers. New Zealand and Australia received the Civic Si hatchback this year, specified much like the American Si, while the redesigned fourth generation made its first appearance in 1987 as a 1988 model.
