The 1976 Honda Accord was the first model year of the nameplate. Honda launched it on 7 May 1976 as a hatchback with three doors, 80 PS and a 2,380 mm wheelbase, a stretched version of the Civic platform, powered by a long-stroke development of the Civic's 1.2 and 1.5 liter engines with CVCC technology to meet tightening Japanese emission rules. North American cars claimed 68 hp, while European and other export markets received a model without emissions equipment. Honda chose the name to reflect a desire for accord and harmony between people, society and the automobile, and the German manufacturer Opel unsuccessfully sued over its similarity to the Rekord. Standard equipment covered an AM/FM radio, intermittent wipers, a tachometer and cloth seats.
