The 2000 Honda Insight was the first model year in North America, built as a two seater and sold in one trim, with a manual transmission, and with air conditioning as an extra. The EPA highway rating of 70 miles per US gallon at the time made it the first mass produced hybrid sold in the United States, and the Toyota Prius followed in June 2000. Under the updated EPA testing method used from the 2008 model year, the 2000 Insight with manual shift 5 speed is rated 61 mpg highway and 53 combined.
