The 1997 Honda Prelude was the first full model year of the fifth generation, introduced on 7 November 1996, and it grew slightly, with a wheelbase 1.4 inches longer and an overall length 3.2 inches greater, while base curb weight rose by 145 pounds. Every North American model had a 195 hp 2.2 liter DOHC VTEC four cylinder and 16 inch alloy wheels, and the Type SH came only with a 5 speed manual. The Motegi edition took its name from the Twin Ring Motegi circuit, which Honda built in 1997 as part of its campaign to bring IndyCar racing to Japan.
