Honda introduced the 1996 Prelude Si and SR with a 2.3 liter DOHC four cylinder engine; in Canada the Si was sold as the SR and the VTEC as the SR-V. The fifth generation Prelude was introduced on 7 November 1996 as a return to the more square body style of the third generation. The fourth generation obligated Japanese owners to yearly taxes, because its width dimensions and engine displacement exceeded Japanese government regulations for vehicles classified as compact.
