The 1997 Honda CR-V was the first model year on sale in North America, going on sale in February 1997. The EX was added to the single LX trim, bringing anti lock brakes and 15 inch alloys over the LX, and buyers could choose front wheel drive or Honda's Real Time AWD. Plastic cladding covered the bumpers and fender wells on all models, and over the years 1997 to 2000 the CR-V climbed from 66,000 to 123,000 sales in the United States, and in Canada from 8,000 to 17,000.
