Tram

Rail Mode

An urban rail transit mode, also called a streetcar or trolley in North America, whose vehicles run on tracks laid into public streets alongside ordinary traffic rather than on a fully separated right of way. The earliest fare-paying passenger tramway, the horse-drawn Swansea and Mumbles Railway in Wales, opened in 1807, and electric traction overtook horse and cable power in most cities by the early twentieth century. Trams declined through the mid-twentieth century as buses and private cars took over city streets, but many cities have reintroduced them since as a lower-cost, street-level alternative to a full metro.
