Thomas Savery (about 1650 to 1715) was an English inventor and engineer. He invented the first commercially used steam-powered device, a steam pump often referred to as the Savery engine, in which steam pressure acted directly on the water. His steam pump was a revolutionary method of pumping water that improved mine drainage and made widespread public water supply practicable. It is an early step in the history of the steam engine that later drove locomotives and ships.
