The XR400R was introduced in 1996 with a frame, plastics and suspension components similar to those of the XR250R and a similar air-cooled RFVC engine, but with more suspension travel and a longer wheelbase. Honda updated the engine of the XR250R in 1996, with a new crankcase, smaller exhaust valves to fix a problem of heads that cracked and an improved automatic decompressor that eased starting. The XR400R was arguably the most versatile bike in the XR lineup, and many were raced in amateur motocross and enduro events.
