Honda first launched the XL1000V Varadero in 1998 as a 1999 model, after showing it to the public at the 1998 Munich motorcycle show. It was Honda's flagship adventure touring motorcycle with a V-twin engine of 996 cc, cooled by liquid, whose design comes from the VTR1000F Firestorm. Honda used the term Adventure, rather than the Dual Sport it used for the XR650L, for motorcycles designed for touring over long distances with basic ability off-road.
