Chiaki Kato, the president of Honda Motorcycle, announced in March 2017 that the Z50 series would end in August 2017 because of new and pending emission control regulations in Japan, which small engines would find very hard to meet. A limited run 50th Anniversary Special Edition, offered only to Japanese buyers, marked the retirement, and 500 buyers were picked by an online lottery that ran from July 21 to August 21.
