The press described the Gold Wing in September 1974 as the first attack on the market above 750cc by the world's biggest motorcycle manufacturer, and Honda introduced it in Cologne, at the Motorcycle Show of October 1974. With its flat four shaft drive powertrain, the 1974 Gold Wing was Japan's first production motorcycle to have a four stroke engine cooled by water, and the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan lists a GL1000 built in 1974 among its 240 Landmarks of Japanese Automotive Technology.
