The Hawker Siddeley HS 780 Andover is a twin-engined turboprop military transport built for the Royal Air Force and developed from the Avro-designed HS 748 airliner. The RAF asked for a medium tactical freighter at the start of the 1960s, and Avro answered with a military 748 that had an upswept rear fuselage, a rear loading ramp and a kneeling undercarriage for easier freight loading. The test aircraft first flew on 21 December 1963 and the first production Andover C.1 flew on 9 July 1965. Later RAF versions included a VIP transport and an electronic calibration type, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force retired its Andovers in 1998. The aircraft is named after an older Avro biplane.
