The AS565 Panther is the military version of the AS365 Dauphin, a medium-weight, twin-engine helicopter that Aérospatiale decided to turn into a purpose-built military machine during the 1980s. The civil SA365 N Dauphin was the starting point, and the prototype designated AS365M made its first flight on 28 February 1984. Production was launched in May 1986 under the name AS565 Panther. It is powered by a pair of Turbomeca Arriel turboshaft engines and uses a fenestron anti-torque rotor in the tail. In its commando configuration it can carry up to ten armed soldiers besides two pilots, and the cabin can be reconfigured for search and rescue, medical evacuation and anti-submarine or anti-surface warfare.
