An artificial waterway across the Isthmus of Panama connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. A French effort led by Ferdinand de Lesseps in the 1880s, attempting a sea level canal on the Suez model, failed after enormous losses of money and life to tropical disease and engineering miscalculation. The United States took over the project, adopted a lock based design instead of a sea level cut, and completed the canal in 1914.
