The legal and physical corridor of land within which a road, railway, canal or pipeline is built and operated, and the priority rules that govern who or what may proceed first at a shared crossing point. Acquiring right of way, whether by purchase, grant or eminent domain, is often the largest cost and the largest political obstacle in building new transport infrastructure.
