English civil and mechanical engineer, chief engineer of the Great Western Railway. He designed the steamships SS Great Western, SS Great Britain and SS Great Eastern, each in turn the largest ship in the world, and built the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the Box Tunnel. Regularly named among the greatest figures of the Industrial Revolution.
