English railway engineer who built the Stockton and Darlington Railway, opened in 1825 as the first public railway to carry steam locomotive traffic, and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway of 1830, the first railway to rely exclusively on steam traction on a scheduled timetable. He designed early locomotives including Locomotion No. 1, and with his son Robert built the Rocket, winner of the 1829 Rainhill Trials. Widely called the father of railways.
