Cosworth JD / VJ engine

Automotive Engines

The JD and VJ family is a series of 3.0-litre, naturally aspirated V10 Formula One engines that Cosworth designed in partnership with Ford and that were used between 1996 and 1999 by Sauber, Stewart, Minardi and Tyrrell. The first of them, the JD, was a completely new 2,992 cc, 72 degree V10 with an 89 mm by 48.1 mm bore and stroke, designed for 1996 to make more power at higher revs, and it produced about 670 bhp at 15,800 rpm. It was developed into the VJ and VJM with the same vee angle, bore and stroke, reaching 720 bhp for racing and 730 bhp for qualifying at 16,500 rpm. All three were badged as the Ford Zetec-R. The best early results were Johnny Herbert's third place at Monaco in 1996 and Rubens Barrichello's second place there a year later, the first points finish for the newly formed Stewart Grand Prix team.
