Cosworth BDA series

Automotive Engines

The Cosworth BDA series is a family of inline four cylinder, 16 valve, double overhead camshaft engines that Cosworth developed from 1969 for Ford, starting with the 1601 cc BDA built on the Ford Kent engine block for road use in the Ford Escort and for homologation in FIA Group 2 and Group 4. The name means belt drive, A type, after the toothed belt developed for the Fiat 124 that drives the camshafts. Mike Hall created it while Keith Duckworth was busy designing the DFV. The series grew into the 1701 cc BDB, the fuel injected BDC, the Formula 2 engines BDE, BDF and BDG, which reached 1975 cc on a new aluminium block, the Formula Atlantic BDD, the turbocharged BDT used in the Escort RS1700T and the Ford RS200, and the BDR kit engine for the Caterham Super Seven. BDD and BDM engines won many Formula Atlantic and Formula Pacific championships through the 1980s.
