Porsche 3512 engine

Automotive Engines

The Porsche 3512 was a 3.5-litre V12 racing engine that Porsche designed for Formula One at the start of the 1990s, when the sport moved to normally aspirated 3.5-litre engines. Its designation reads as displacement followed by cylinder count. Hans Mezger, a veteran Porsche engineer, gave it an 80-degree V angle and a power take-off from the centre of the engine, in effect two V6 units combined, a layout he had earlier used on the flat-12 of the Porsche 917. Porsche supplied it to the Footwork Arrows team for 1991 under a four-year contract, but it arrived late, was large and heavy at about 190 kilograms with its ancillaries, and made only around 500 kilowatts. It failed repeatedly, the team went back to a Ford Cosworth V8 during the season, and Porsche ended the deal in October 1991 and has not returned to Formula One.
