Ford-Cosworth HB engine

Automotive Engines

The Ford-Cosworth HB is a series of 3.5-litre, naturally aspirated V8 Formula One engines that Cosworth designed, developed and produced in partnership with Ford and that raced between 1989 and 1994. It replaced the DFV, DFZ and DFR line with a completely new design by Geoff Goddard and a narrower 75 degree vee, with the first drawings made in May 1988, the first blocks running on the test bench that December and the engine racing at the French Grand Prix in July 1989. Benetton had it exclusively as its works engine until customer supply began in 1991, and the customers over its life were Benetton, Fondmetal, McLaren, Lotus, Minardi, Footwork, Simtek and Larrousse. Tom Walkinshaw Racing also developed a Jaguar badged version for sports car racing that was fitted to the Jaguar XJR-14 sports prototype.
