Cosworth GA / GAA V6

Automotive Engines

The Cosworth GA, also called the GAA, is a 3,412 cc, 60 degree V6 racing engine that Ford commissioned from Cosworth in May 1972, built on the Ford Essex V6 block. Ford turned to Cosworth when the Weslake pushrod V6 engines in its Capris had been developed as far as they could go in the European Touring Car Championship. Mike Hall, who had already designed the DFV and the BDA, gave the new engine twin overhead camshaft aluminium alloy heads with four valves a cylinder, Lucas mechanical fuel injection, dry sump lubrication and a steel crankshaft. Ford expected at least 400 hp, the first test run gave 420 hp, and in race tune it made about 462 bhp at 9,000 rpm. It proved highly competitive against BMW in the 1973 season in the Capri RS 3100 and was used in the later years of European Formula 5000, and Ford Motorsport sold 100 of them.
