The Volvo V70 is an executive car, sold as an estate, that Volvo Cars made from 1996 to 2016 across three generations; the V stands for versatility and 70 for relative platform size, larger than a V40 and smaller than a V90. The first generation of 1996 to 2000 debuted in November 1996 as an improved development of the Volvo 850 estate on the P80 platform, with front or all-wheel drive, and gained the V70 XC or Cross Country in September 1997; its sedan was the S70. The second generation of 2000 to 2007 used the P2 platform shared with the S60, introduced a detuned 20-valve engine and drive-by-wire throttles, and had its crossover renamed the XC70 for the 2003 model year. The third generation, shown in February 2007, was built on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and XC70, with the S80 as its sedan. Volvo also sold bi-fuel versions that could run on petrol or compressed natural gas and, in some markets, a diesel V70 TDI. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, and the XC70 followed on 13 May 2016.
