Willys Whippet

Automobiles

The Willys Whippet was a small, cheap American car sold by Willys-Overland of Toledo, Ohio, from 1926 to 1931. After Overland production ended in 1926, John North Willys wanted an especially small and inexpensive car, and the Whippet of autumn 1926 had the shortest wheelbase of any American passenger car then built, only 100.25 inches (2,546 mm). The first Model 96 had a four-cylinder engine of 2,196 cubic centimetres and 30 horsepower (22 kW) and came as a five-seat tourer, a five-seat sedan or a two-seat coupe. In January 1927 the wheelbase was lengthened and more body styles were added, and the six-cylinder Model 93A with 40 horsepower (29 kW) joined it. The 1928 four-cylinder cabriolet was five dollars cheaper than the cheapest Ford, and 110,000 cars were built in 1927 alone. The Wall Street crash ended the line in spring 1931, when Willys-Overland dropped the Whippet in favour of the Willys Six and the new Willys 77. The German Wikipedia treats Whippet as a marque; this entry records the car line.
