Willys was the brand name of Willys-Overland Motors, the Toledo based American automaker founded around John North Willys, who bought the Overland company in 1908 and renamed it Willys-Overland in 1912. For a time it was the second largest car maker in the United States after Ford. The company is best known for building the Willys MB, the most produced military jeep of the Second World War, and for turning the Jeep name into a trademark that it was awarded in 1950, along with the civilian CJ series that followed. After the war it concentrated on Jeep vehicles, returned to passenger cars in 1952 with the compact Willys Aero, and built the Aero and other cars in Brazil. Kaiser Motors bought the company in 1953, and when Kaiser Jeep Corporation was formed in 1963 the Willys name disappeared in the United States.
