The MG 18/80, first sold as the MG Six, was the car in which the factory designed its own chassis for the first time, ending the reliance on Morris Oxford underpinnings of the 14/28 and 14/40. It used a tuned Morris Light Six engine of 2,468 cc with a chain-driven overhead camshaft and twin SU carburettors, giving about 60 bhp and a top speed of 80 mph. It introduced the vertical-slat MG grille that became a family trait. The Mark I of 1928 to 1931 numbered 501 cars, the Mark II 236, and the Mark III Tigress racer of 1930 only five. No direct successor appeared until the SA of 1936.
