Maserati V8RI

Automobiles

The Maserati V8RI was a single-seat racing car built by Maserati of Italy in four examples in 1935 and 1936. It was launched to challenge the dominance of the German manufacturers in racing and carried several technical innovations. Ernesto Maserati designed it with an unusual front-mounted 90 degree V8 of 4,788.1 cc, different from the engines of Maserati's other cars, fed by a Roots supercharger and two twin-choke Weber carburettors, with twin overhead camshafts, one per bank, and a reported output of 320 CV at 5,300 rpm. The chassis was mostly light alloy, and the gearbox was mounted together with the differential to balance the weights. The name stood for a V8 engine and independent suspension on all four wheels, which was innovative at the time. The first car, chassis 4501, debuted at the 1935 Marne Grand Prix with Philippe Étancelin, but its rear suspension caused stability problems, and the V8RI won only the 1936 Pau Grand Prix.
