Maserati 4CM

Automobiles

The Maserati 4CM is a single-seat racing car that Maserati built from 1932 to 1938 in several series named after their engine size: 1,100, 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 cubic centimetres. The 1100, built from 1932 to 1937, was the first single-seater Maserati made and came from the mechanics of the 4CTR, with hydraulic brakes using two pumps and two circuits instead of steel cables. The 1500 followed in 1934 and attracted several orders from abroad, the 2000 was a one-off car of 1933 kept at the Montague Museum at Beaulieu, and the 2500, also a one-off, was meant for Grand Prix racing. All used a supercharged four-cylinder in-line engine with twin overhead camshafts and a Roots compressor, producing from 90 to 195 CV depending on the series. On 3 June 1937 Giuseppe Furmanik set the world record for the flying mile in the 1500 class at 237.623 km/h, and at the 1937 Florence 1500 Grand Prix the first four finishers drove Maserati cars.
