Alvis 12/40

Automobiles

The Alvis 12/40 was a passenger car that Alvis built from 1922 to 1924 as the successor to the 11/40. Its engine was an inline four-cylinder unit with side-mounted valves, displacing 1,598 cubic centimetres, fitted with a single Solex carburettor and producing 30 brake horsepower (22 kilowatts) at 3,800 revolutions per minute. Buyers could choose a four-seat touring car or a two-seat sports tourer, the roadster form. The front and rear rigid axles hung on semi-elliptic leaf springs, and the top speed was 96 kilometres per hour. In 1924 the Alvis 12/50 SC succeeded it; for the road models that car took over the 12/40 dimensions and 1.6 litre engine, but now with the overhead valves already used on the earlier 12/50 SA and SB.
