The prototype, the Publica Sports, debuted at the 1962 Tokyo Auto Show, and the car went into production in 1965 with the chassis code UP15, raising engine displacement from 700 cc to 800 cc and fitting dual carburetors to lift power from 28 to 45 PS. It had aerodynamic styling by Shozo Sato and Toyota engineer Tatsuo Hasegawa, a former aircraft designer, and weight was kept down with aluminum on selected body panels. About 3,131 units were built between 1965 and 1969, and only about 10 percent are known to have survived.
