The first RAV4, the XA10, was built on a platform of its own that borrowed parts from the Carina and Corolla. It reached Japan in May 1994, a five door version followed in March 1995, and the United States saw it from January 1996, with dual airbags as standard. It was sold with a three door body, front or four wheel drive and a manual or automatic gearbox, and Automobile Magazine named it Automobile of the Year for 1997. A slight restyle and a soft top three door arrived for 1998, and an electric RAV4 EV was produced for fleet lease.
