The Raum first appeared in May 1997 as a five seat mini MPV sold only in Japan at Toyota Netz retail sales channels. Its front doors opened conventionally while the rear doors slid open rearward and interlocked with the front doors. This was the first model year of the Toyota Raum (first generation, XZ10), 1997 to 2002, the first generation covered for the Toyota Raum; the 1998 model year follows it.
