In 1984 the J70 was introduced as a soft top, hard top, fibre reinforced plastic top, utility, cab chassis and Troop Carrier, with the petrol engine replaced by a 4.0 liter 3F. The lighter duty 70 Light had a four wheel coil spring solid axle suspension and was sold in some markets as the Bundera or the Landcruiser II, later called 70 Prado. An automatic transmission was introduced, making it the first four wheel drive Japanese vehicle with an automatic. It was alongside the 60 series, and the 40 series ended that year.
