After first appearing at the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show, the ist went on sale on 8 May 2002 at Netz Store, at Toyopet Store excluding Osaka prefecture and at Toyota Store in Osaka prefecture only. At its introduction 42,000 orders were received in Japan. This was the first model year of the Toyota ist (first generation, XP60), 2002 to 2006, the first generation covered for the Toyota ist; the 2003 model year follows it.
