The GR Corolla was introduced on 31 March 2022, ahead of the 2023 model year, after its debut was delayed by a year because Akio Toyoda, then CEO of Toyota, was not satisfied with the tuning of a prototype. In 2022 Rookie Racing also debuted the gaseous hydrogen powered GR Corolla H2 concept at the SUGO Super Taikyu race. This was the first model year of the Toyota GR Corolla (single generation), 2022 to 2026, the first generation covered for the Toyota GR Corolla; the 2023 model year follows it.
