The first generation Lexus LX, the LX 450 of the J80 series, was developed rapidly in the mid 1990s because American trade sanctions on Japanese luxury cars were threatened. Production started in November 1995, the first car rolled off the production line in December 1995, it was released in the United States in January 1996 as a 1996 model, and Canada received it from 1997. It was Lexus's first SUV and was almost entirely based on the sixth generation Toyota Land Cruiser (J80), with a restyled, more luxurious interior and softer suspension settings. It was powered by a 4.5 litre twin-cam four-valve inline-six engine producing 160 kilowatts, and both front and rear axles were solid.
